Part Time Bus Operator Position Available

Door to Door Service

Door to Door is our appointment based service that picks you up at your home (or requested pick up location) and delivers you to your destination in the Cottage Grove area.

What is Local Door-to-Door Service?
South Lane Wheels is the only door-to-door bus service located in South Lane County. What this means is that instead of having to wait at a bus stop, South Lane Wheels will pick you up and deliver you to the location of your choice. What makes this service unique is that reservations are scheduled based on the pickup or drop off time. Please keep in mind that the Local Door-to-Door Service is still a ridesharing, which means other passengers may board and be dropped off en route to your pickup location and destination.

We recommend making a reservation at least 24 hours in advance because they are booked first call, first served.

Same day requests are limited based on that day’s capacity; however, if we can fit the ride, we will.

Rides start at $3 one way and are available within and outside the city limits of Cottage Grove. The cost per trip is determined by the distance between the pickup and drop off locations.

Service Area
We serve the rural areas of South Lane County including Cottage Grove and Creswell.

Metro Shuttle

For when time is of the essence... The South Lane Wheels Metro Shuttle provides reservation based service from Cottage Grove and Creswell to the Eugene and Springfield areas. Like the Door To Door Service our Metro Shuttle is also apart of our appointment based model.  Ride into the Eugene/Springfield metro area confident that you will make it to your appointment on time. We ask that you make your reservation as far in advance as possible to ensure space is available.

What is the Metro Shuttle?
The Metro Shuttle service is a door-to-door service designed for South Lane residents who have places to go that are outside of the local service area.

South Lane area residents are shuttled to points north such as Creswell, Eugene, and Springfield. Creswell residents also go north but often choose locations within South Lane County.

What separates this service from others is its longer distance door-to-door nature while still being a ridesharing service.

It’s most common use is for medical appointments, and other activities that have exact appointment times. Riders also reserve this service for Eugene/Springfield area shopping trips, shows, and other events that are less structured. Metro Shuttle does not go to the Eugene Airport.

Be Responsible
CANCELLATION POLICY- Please be considerate and respectful of other riders and our drivers by calling the dispatcher to cancel a reservation in advance or it is considered a “No–Show.”

The “5-MINUTE RULE” allows the driver to wait up to 5-minutes after the scheduled pick up time for a rider to board the vehicle. If a rider does not board within the 5-minutes, the driver will leave, and report this trip as a “No–Show.”

A pattern of “No–Shows” may affect future ride requests.

Be Prepared
All of our services have a schedule to maintain with the riders’ needs in mind.

  • Riders need to be at their pick up location before the scheduled pick up time.
  • Unscheduled return trip is considered a “Will Call” ride which may have a 30-minute wait after pick up call is made.
  • We accept cash, check or SLW ticket. Drivers do not make or carry change.
  • Drivers and SLW office sell discounted ticket books.
  • Riders must pay the fare upon boarding and have ready any carry on items.

Service Area
By default, our Metro Shuttle service is expressly for rides of 10 miles are more, almost always to the Eugene/Springfield area(s). We only accept trips that originate and/or are completed in the southern region of Lane County such as Creswell and Cottage Grove.

Lane - Douglas Connector

The Lane-Douglas Connector (LDC) is a pilot project funded by the Rural Veterans Healthcare Transportation grant. This new service offers public transportation to veterans and the public in rural communities for better access to healthcare services and shopping opportunities. Everyone is eligible to ride the Lane-Douglas Connector starting January 5, 2021

HOW TO RIDE
Space is available on a first come, first serve basis with scheduled rides having priority over a walk-on request. Bus will not leave any stop before the posted time on the timetable, so arrive 5-10 minutes early to allow for boarding time.

Bus stop Walk-on: Before boarding, the driver will ask for your trip destination and return trip time in order to share these details with the Umpqua Public Transportation District (UPTD) dispatcher. The dispatcher will determine if there will be capacity on the bus for each leg of the requested trip(s). If the answer is YES, the rider may board.

If the ride can’t be accommodated, the rider may not board because other reserved trips will be affected by adding a Walk-On. If this rider wants to schedule trips for later that day, the dispatcher may be able to offer and schedule guaranteed future trips.

Advanced ride scheduling: Call UPTD dispatcher, toll-free (888) 232-8121 in advance of the posted departure time at bus stop location. If the requested trip to or from a destination doesn’t exceed bus capacity, the trip will be scheduled. Then, the rider needs to be at the scheduled bus stop before the bus leaves at the departure time.

SERVICE AREA AND COST
LDC route makes two round trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays between Eugene VA Clinic and the Roseburg VA Medical Center with stops in Cottage Grove and Drain.

The bus will serve only the bus stops listed with a number and name on the timetable and route map.

Route has no direct connections with the LTD or UPTD bus routes.

TIMETABLE NOTE: The direction of travel for each round trip is labeled SOUTHBOUND or NORTHBOUND and by the order of the bus stop numbers in the timetable and map.

Veterans with ID always ride for FREE!

RIDES ARE FREE FOR ALL for an introductory period, so try the Lane – Douglas Connector NOW!!

HEALTH AND SAFETY LDC bus has a limited capacity according to health regulations and social distancing requirements. Drivers wear a mask, perform regular bus wipe downs of interior contact surfaces, and passengers are required to bring a mask to wear while onboard.

About South Lane Wheels

SLW is not just for seniors. Anyone can ride! We are a public transportation system connecting people with where they want to go in South Lane County including Cottage Grove, Creswell, Dorena, Culp Creek, Saginaw, London, and Lorane. These rural communities are very fortunate to have the options of a low cost app based mobility on demand, local and metro Dial-A-Ride services, plus group rides within FTA Charter Guidelines.

Established in 1982 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) based in Cottage Grove, our mission is to provide safe, accessible and economical service to those who need transportation to local destinations and as far away as the Eugene/Springfield metro areas. For 38 years we have provided thousands of individuals rides to doctor appointments, shopping, restaurants, residences, nutrition sites, recreation, workplaces, school, and special events.

Last year South Lane Wheels provided approximately 12,844 one way rides to destinations where folks need to go. Whenever possible we grouped riders to better our environment as we drove over 64,448 miles. All of our six vehicles are wheelchair accessible, which means a lot to the 324 rides for folks using mobility devices.

South Lane Wheels is funded by federal, state and local grants, supported by local and in-kind donations, and operated by a dedicated staff and volunteer board that believe in our programs. Whenever possible, we partner with area agencies and businesses to maximize our impact. The board of directors provides oversight and conducts a public meeting once a month.
